On November 20, 1776, war came to Bergen County. Five-thousand British, Hessian and Provincial Forces under Lieutenant General Charles Lord Cornwallis ascended the Palisades from the lower Closter landing and threatened to trap Fort Lee's garrison on Bergen Neck. Still smarting from the loss of nearly three thousand men days earlier at Fort Washington, only the timely notice of an alert officer, and a certain bridge crossing the Hackensack saved the army from a second disaster in less than a week.

Join historians Kevin Wright and Todd Braisted as they lead you through some of the forgotten places integral to the invasion and the birth of our country. This year's itinerary includes the area of downtown Fort Lee where the actual fort and garrison stood, travel north to the top of the Palisades where King George's men scaled and dragged cannon up a treacherously steep incline and then to Liberty Pole, the crossroads that held the key to victory or defeat.

You will travel along the routes in style in a chartered mini-bus, leaving from Historic New Bridge Landing at 10:30 AM and returning at 3:30 PM. A lunch, complete with appetizer, salad, entree and dessert will be served at Griffin's Restaurant in Cresskill.

Cost for the entire package is $85.00 for members of the Bergen County Historical Society, $95.00 for non-members.  Space is extremely limited, so please make your reservations quickly! Each previous staff ride has sold out, and we anticipate another full bus this year, so don't miss out! Please arrive at the Steuben House by 9:30 AM on November 12th orientation and background.

We look forward to traveling the streets of history with you!
