Research Request:

In order to provide access to the Library collections to researchers who are unable to visit the Library, queries will be accepted by mail or email.  BCHS members may submit three free queries per year.  Nonmembers will be charged a $10 fee for each query. Queries should include relevant, concise information and a specific question to be answered, as well as the researcher’s complete contact information (name, address, phone, and email).  Library volunteers will provide 15 minutes of research for each query.  The researcher will be provided a list of sources consulted and an answer if one is found.  For queries which will require longer than 15 minutes of research or which cannot be answered from the Society’s collections, the researcher will be referred to another repository, given information about places to post queries, and/or referred to a paid researcher.  There is no charge for referral.  We regret that we are unable to spend more time, but our volunteer staff is working very hard to maintain, process, and index the collection to increase its usefulness to everyone.  The first 3 photocopies are free.  Additional copies are charged according to our fee schedule.

The Society will provide a list of Society members who are willing to do research in the Library collections for a fee.  (list to come this Fall, 2009). The Society makes no representation regarding their capabilities and does not regulate their fees or practices.  Researchers are urged to check references and to understand the terms and conditions of the desired research.  The Society will also inform the researcher about lists of accredited researchers from such organizations as the Association of Professional Genealogists, whose members can be hired to do research.
