The Bergen County Historical Society presents

Button Up!
Sunday, March 21, 2010
12 noon to 4:00 PM

Come out and celebrate Women's History Month and the return of spring with a special exhibition of the Elsie Heiss Button Collection in the Steuben House, 1209 Main St., River Edge, NJ 07661 on Sunday, March 21, 2010 from noon to 4 PM. The Bergen County Historical Society and the Bergen Button Club will show selections and share knowledge not only of this wonderful collection but also of several private collections as well. Elsie Heiss especially collected buttons with images of birds. Of great interest, rare buttons honoring George Washington's First Inauguration in 1789 will be shown and their history described in a short talk. Visitors will also be able to inspect button strings. Bergen Button Club member Pam Muzio will present "An Introduction to Buttons." Historian and BCHS Past President Kevin Wright gives an illustrated talk on "The History of Women in Bergen County" in the Steuben House at 2 PM. Using buttons donated by Simply the Best Clothing of Teaneck, children, five years and older, will be able to choose a button and sew it on a felt pocket or felt flower pin under supervision of BCHS Trustee Denise Piccino and her helpers. The button-sewing project takes place in the Campbell-Christie House.

Cider, coffee, tea and button-shaped cookies will be available at the Black Horse Tavern in the Campbell-Christie House with tavern-keeper John Oddie. The gift shop and Jersey Dutch Out Kitchen will also be open to visitors. For info, call 201-343-9492

Suggested donation: $7 adults, Children (5-14), $5. Under 5 and BCHS members, free. Wear walking shoes or boots, depending on weather.

New Bridge was a prosperous mill hamlet and inland port, centered upon an oak draw-bridge at the narrows of the Hackensack River in Bergen County, New Jersey. Known as the Bridge That Saved a Nation for its association with the retreat of the Continental army from Fort Lee in November 1776, New Bridge was a battleground, encampment ground and military headquarters throughout the American Revolution. It is home to three landmarks of Jersey Dutch architecture, namely, the Zabriskie-Steuben House, the Campbell-Christie House and the Demarest-Paulison Mill House. The Bergen County Historical Society, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) volunteer organization, has made its home at Historic New Bridge Landing since 1939. This event is cosponsored by the Historic New Bridge Landing park Commission and the Blauvelt-Demarest Foundation.
