Otto Krause, exempt Fire Chief in Hackensack
« on: February 18, 2010, 09:28:42 AM »
I would like any information about my great grandfather, Otto Krause, who is buried in the Fireman's section of Hackensack Cemetery with a grave marker indicating he was an exempt fire chief.

Can you provide approximate dates for when he would have served?

I looked through Hackensack Illustrated which list firemen in service circa 1896 and didn't see his name.

Depending on the dates of service, I might have some other sources to check.

Thanks.

Sorry to be so long in responding. Otto H. Krause's tombstone is in the firemen's section of Hackensack Cemetery and gives his dates as 1859 to 1925. He didn't move to Hackensack until after the 1900 census, when he lived in Union City, NJ. He also owned the Fairmount Bottling Company and many of his bottles appear on EBAY. In the 1910 census he lived at 720 Main Street and in the 1920 census he lived at 820 Main Street, the same address as the Fairmount Bottling Company. I would guess that he was a fire chief in the 1905-1920 period. Perhaps there was an obituary in the Record when he died in 1925.

He's mentioned briefly in both of George Scudder's works here: http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php?topic=882.0

Search in the .pdf files for "Krause". I'll keep looking.

Thanks! I appreciate anything you can do since 700 miles makes it difficult for me.
