Various Bergen County Public Service Trolley Photos
« on: May 09, 2010, 12:11:41 AM »
Description:

The first photo is of Public Service Railway line car #5218 in the yard at Hackensack, NJ on 6/3/34. The second photo is of PSR car #3515 with a destination sign of “Hudson River” on the car.  The third photo is of a PSR car with a destination sign of “Weehawken” on the car at Weehawken, NJ.  They all measure 2 3/4” x 4 1/2” and are in excellent condition

Anyone know where in Hackensack this "yard" was? Is that the Peoples Trust building in the background? What other building in 1934 Hackensack was that big? The second photo shows Horseshoe Curve on the Palisades. I'm not sure where the exact location of the third photo's scene is.

Anyone know where in Hackensack this "yard" was?

We've figured out where the trolley yard was - on the east side of River St, just north of Mercer St and the Susquehanna railroad trestle.

Here are some other Bergen County trolleys and their posted information from railpictures.net:

1. I found another picture of the same car #5218 in the same yard 4 years later! It was taken just before the Hudson River Line ceased operation.

2. This photo shows a Hudson River Line trolley on Mercer St (not Main St, as the caption says) in 1938. Behind it is the Susquehanna railroad station.

3. This Coytesville Line one was taken in Fort Lee in 1937. The poster's math as far as dating is a little off. (1937 -3 = 1933?)

4. This Hudson River Line trolley was photographed on Pleasant Ave in Paramus in 1938. The poster mentioned that the "location today was near or at Plaza Way, on the southern end of the Garden State Plaza".

Knowing that the Hudson River Line was on W. Pleasant Ave in Maywood, I looked at a map and realized that Plaza Way (Paramus' Pleasant Ave) and Maywood's W. Pleasant Ave were once the same street - one that was probably severed when Rt 17 came through.
