Naturalization Records in Bergen County
« on: August 23, 2010, 06:59:29 PM »
Bergen County Clerk's Office has the applications or petitions for naturalization.

Requirements for a Search of Petitions of Intent for Naturalization (from 1804) at Bergen County Clerk's Office:

Name of person in question (all possible names and spellings)
   Date of Birth of people
   Approximate date of Naturalization
   Address at time of Naturalization

They do not have the naturalization certificates.  The certificates themselves are in Newark.  [quoted from the Bergen County Website; I take this to mean that they are with the records of the US District Court in Newark which are at the National Archives.]

Bergen County naturalization declarations and petitions are on microfilm at the New Jersey State Archives
(see http://www.state.nj.us/state/darm/links/guides/cbecp001.html) for 1804-1906.
They are available through LDS Family History Centers as well.

Naturalization certificates were registered at the US District Court in Newark.

These records are now at the National Archives Branch in New York City.
See their website for instructions on ordering these records.  This link is a good place to start:

Their mailing address is:
NARA - NE Region
201 Varick St
New York  NY  10014
tel:  212-337-1300

Naturalizations after 1982 are housed at the US District Court of Newark in Newark.
