About the Event
Tour Historic New Bridge Landing as we walk the site and end in the Steuben House for cookies and ice tea for a quick tour.
Walk where Thomas Paine described events in The American Crisis, and the Steuben House witnessed General George Washington leading General Greene’s garrison evacuating from Fort Lee to cross the Hackensack River drawbridge and narrowly escaping entrapment during the November 20, 1776 "Retreat to Victory."Â
Because of the strategic position on the banks of the Hackensack River at New Bridge, the Steuben House survived throughout the American Revolution and was used by both Colonial and British soldiers as a fort, battleground and reconnaissance outpost.
The unique architecture is exemplified in the Jersey Dutch sandstone home that was built in 1752 and enlarged in 1767 by miller and merchants Jan and Annetje Zabriskie, who ultimately sided with the Crown and fled to New York City during the Revolutionary War.
Meet me in the Meadow at the corner of Main Street & New Bridge Road, River Edge, NJ. Tour given by Deborah Powell, Commissioner on the HNBL State Park Commission and past BCHS president.Â
Free Parking across from the Meadow, noted on the bottom left. Only one block from the New Bridge Landing train stop on the Pascack Valley line out of Secaucus Junction. Dogs on leash are welcome though not in the house. Make a reservation or pay at the beginning of tour, 100% goes to our mission!
