About the Event
At the invitation of President James Monroe, the Marquis de Lafayette made a triumphant return tour of the United States in 1824-1825. Lafayette visited all 24 states over 13 months. This "Farewell Tour," was a celebration of Lafayette's contributions to the American Revolution and a rekindling of revolutionary spirit. As the last living Revolutionary War general, he was welcomed by large crowds, honored with parades, dinners, and public events, and given the title "The Nation's Guest". In Hackensack, he received a very warm welcome as described in this article by the late historian Kevin W. Wright, https://www.bergencountyhistory.org/_files/ugd/6adfb1_2752240cdc914af2a35f1c38a0e52d2c.pdf?index=true
We will have new exhibits including an elegant chair with original blue velvet upholstery that Lafayette sat in on July 12, 1825 in Hackensack.
Our celebration includes a Story & Song presentation featuring Lafayette by Ridley and Anne Enslow.
Tour the museum site and the Campbell-Christie House will be open for refreshments.
