In 1776, Abraham Van Buskirk was a leading figure in the neighborhood of New Bridge.  A “practitioner of physick and apothecary,” he served in the Bergen County Militia as surgeon, under his father in law, Colonel Theunis Dey.  He served in various local committees and to all appearances supported the Revolutionary cause.  In truth however, he was Bergen County’s leading Loyalist.  By the end of the year, he was raising a complete battalion for British service, which he would lead in action for the remainder of the war.  With the confiscation of his estate, he and his wife Jane and their family would remove to the new city of Shelburne, Nova Scotia, where he would resume public life.  Join us as we examine the life and career of Bergen County’s most zealous supporter of King George!
