CAMPBELL-CHRISTIE HOUSE
Historic New Bridge Landing
1201-1209 Main St.
River Edge, NJ 07661
www.bergencountyhistory.org

A gambrel, center-hall sandstone dwelling at the busy intersection of River Road and Henley Avenue, New Milford, in 1774. It was probably enlarged to its present dimensions just after the American Revolution (1783), since the wooden trapezoidal lintels, painted to look like sandstone, are indicative of that time. John Christie, blacksmith, purchased this house in 1795 and continued its operation as a tavern. The paneled reveals and Dutch stoop at front entrance, together with the fireplace mantles date to around 1835, when a frame kitchen wing was added. Subordinate lateral wings, generally built of contrasting material to the main block of the dwelling, are a hallmark of Bergen Dutch architecture. It is a County Historic Site and in a joint agreement moved to River Edge onto BCHS land in 1977 by County Freeholders. It is operated by the BCHS and open for special events. Gift shop and restroom.

Listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places.

HISTORIC NEW BRIDGE LANDING PARK
1201-1209 Main St.
PO Box 4131
River Edge, NJ 07661
www.newbridgelanding.org

www.bergencountyhistory.org

Historic New Bridge Landing, strategically situated at the narrows of the Hackensack River, contains the Steuben House, a State Historic Site, the Campbell-Christie House, a County Historic Site, and the Demarest House, all landmarks of Bergen Dutch sandstone architecture.

The darkest hours of the American Revolution were played out at New Bridge in November 1776 when Washington led the fleeing American garrison of Fort Lee across the BRIDGE THAT SAVED A NATION. Eyewitness Thomas Paine immortalized the crossing in the first essay of the American Crisis beginning with the memorable phrase "These are the times that try men's souls."

Historic New Bridge Landing not only preserves an exceptional fragment of the Jersey Dutch countryside, it also holds pre-historic significance being the site of an Indian "Castle", occupied by the Hackensack Indians.

The mid-19th century barn and a replica of a 1770 outkitchen along with all the Campbell-Christie and Demarest houses are located on Bergen County Historical Society land, the BCHS is the largest landowner at New Bridge. The BCHS is not a government supported agency. We rely on upon volunteer support, especially membership to protect our irreplaceable heritage and to pass on the lessons of history.

The 1888-89 swing bridge was restored by the County of Bergen in 2002. The Revolutionary War Battle ground extends into Brett Park, Teaneck.

See individual listings for visiting hours.

The Bergen County Historical Society's headquarters are at HNBL and provides all progamming at the site. The BCHS's museum collections are in storage since the April 2007 Flood. The Historic New Bridge Landing Park Commission is the managing agency (See below). Please see the BCHS website for more history.

The historic village spans the Hackensack River at the intersection of four municipalities (River Edge, New Milford, Teaneck and Hackensack) and encompasses municipal, county and state owned resources. Representatives from each government entity as well as from the Bergen County Historical Society and the Blauvelt-Demarest Foundation serve on the Commission. The Commission has successfully combined
money, expertise, from a multitude of public and private sources to leverage restoration, land acquisition, and site enhancement and has in a very short time shown itself to be a model for success.
